The camera of choice on the ISS is the Nikon D4. With a 16.4 megapixel resolution and highly sensitive image sensor, it is ideal for low light situations. A range of lenses are available, but Tim preferred to use either a 28mm, 50-500mm, 400mm or 800mm lens.

Although astronauts get some training in photography prior to launch, nothing beats on the job experience and some helpful tips from more experienced crewmates. It takes a lot of practice to get a good night time photo of a city that is 400km beneath you when you’re travelling at 25 times the speed of sound!

Tim’s full selection of images can be found on Flickr.
